If you were one of those who took advantage of the Steam Link and Steam Controller sale bundle that comes around every so often, chances are you use the Link way more than the Controller. That's my story at least. That said, a new update to Steam's Beta client has added full support for customizable options for an Xbox One and Xbox 360 controller, similar to what PS4 controllers got last month.
Here's the official Patch note for the update per the Steam Community Forum:
"Added XBox 360, Xbox One, and Generic X-Input controller configurator support. This allows all recognized controller types to use the advanced mapping features of the Steam Controller Configurator. Note that because X-Input currently lacks per-controller means of unique identification, all controllers of that type will share personalization and configuration settings. As they share the same inputs, Xbox 360/One/Generic controllers will all see each-others configurations when browsing. Automatic conversion will be attempted when loading configurations from other controller types."
It only makes sense that Xbox controllers would get enhanced Steam support, and frankly, it's a bit of a surprise that they didn't get it ahead of PS4 controllers, but at this point, it's whatever. It's also worth mentioning that you can save profiles for specific controllers that Steam will automatically recall the moment you plug your controller in.
If you're interested in getting in on this new Beta update, you have to access it yourself by doing the following:
So there you have it, PC players. When you decide to take a break from the Mouse and Keyboard (without telling your buddies of course) and want to kick back with a controller, Steam has you covered.
