Stoic, the team behind The Banner Saga 3, which is planned to complete the trilogy, talks about what's next for them after the third entry releases. Their answer includes new horizons.
Banner Saga 3 may not even have a release date yet, but Stoic seems to want people to know that they're not done after their trilogy finishes. The Banner Saga has a strong cult following for its engaging story and gripping, difficult gameplay. The world it takes place in is represented in a way that has the player asking for more.
John Watson, co-founder and technical director of Stoic talks to Game Watcher about the studio's plans for the future. He notes that the world of The Banner Saga is rich, with opportunities to tell parallel stories, prequels and even sequels to the trilogy. But instead, he says he wants to let the series rest, at least for a while.
“There’s a lot of world building in this trilogy and we left a lot of the history and certain events offscreen. The world is rich enough that we can take on things that are happening parallel to this trilogy, before, or even after the events players know. That said, we’d probably let the series rest for a bit and let the audience get hungry for the next thing.”
So what's next from the tactical RPG developer? According to Watson, they're looking to explore a new IP. But what? “something in a competitive, tactical combat capacity," he said.
The team hasn't drafted anything official, but a new IP is something they're interested in. Banner Saga 3 has no release date as of yet, but it is listed for PC and Mac with plans to port to PS4, Xbox One and mobile devices.
