Last month, Sony made waves by acquiring one of the most talented developers out there: Insomniac Games. The developer has made a name for itself by delivering a handful of incredible games such as Spider-Man, Ratchet and Clank, and Sunset Overdrive.
While Insomniac Games has been largely known for making PlayStation exclusives, they shook things up in 2014 with Sunset Overdrive. The whacky, colorful third-person shooter combined fast-paced action with irreverent humor making it one of Xbox’s most beloved exclusives.
Fans have been clamoring for a sequel for years but given the game didn’t do huge numbers sales-wise and Insomniac was busy with other titles, nothing came to fruition. Fans thought the dream was ultimately dead after the studio was bought by Sony but it turns out, there’s hope that not only a sequel could come someday but perhaps the first game could release on PS4 as well.
Sony’s Shuhei Yoshida said in an interview with Inside Games that Microsoft doesn’t own the rights to Sunset Overdrive anymore. “SIE holds the rights to past Insomniac Games works,” said Yoshida. As for whether a sequel or port could come to PlayStation, Yoshida played coy and said he’s excited about future Insomniac titles.
While there’s no word as to what Insomniac Games is working on next, all signs point to a sequel to Spider-Man likely for PlayStation 5. Sony has been demoing the hardware behind their next-gen PlayStation with the first Spider-Man game, showcasing load times and other performance upgrades.
Insomniac also has an intense passion for the Marvel superhero and the first game sold over 13 million copies in less than a year. To assume a sequel isn’t in development is to assume Sony doesn’t like money. Still, there’s no word quite yet but one has to imagine Sony will make the announcement after they reveal the next PlayStation.
