Super Mario 64 gets remade in HD on Unity and it’s amazing

In 1996, Super Mario 64 made its release on the N64. Now it has been updated to meet 21st century standards, and boy does it look good. Erik Ross, a computer science student, created a Custom Character Controller from scratch for Unity. This controller fulfills common character functions like pushback, detection, slope limiting and collider ignoring.

Basically, it's a Unity developer tool. To demonstrate his project, Ross recreated Super Mario 64's first level, Bob-Omb Battlefield.

Everything is just as you remember it, except a little more awesome. The video of the recreation went viral over the weekend. Does that mean there's room for a remake in the community? Would a Super Mario 64 HD remake work today?

Nintendo should find out by releasing it on the Wii U:

If you want to try out the first level, you can! Download it here on Windows, Mac or Linux.
