Super Mario Bros. has a new world-record speedrun

From the previous record holder

YouTuber and speedrunner “darbian” recently set a new world record for the original Super Mario Bros.—by beating his own record.

Previously, darbian completed the game in just 4:57:647. In his latest and greatest attempt, he shaved 387 milliseconds off his time, which clocked in at 4:57:260. The deciding moment comes in around 3:31 in the video above, when he manages to save a jump on a warp pipe.

Notably, darbian’s record is for any percentage (or “any%”) speedruns of Super Mario Bros., which only require defeating Bowser and do allow warping between levels, hence darbian's jump to level eight.

Darbian says he’s finished with Super Mario Bros. for now. “I have reached my potential in this category,” he said of his accomplishment. “I’m done! My quest is over.” Fortunately, there are plenty of other games for him to speedrun, many of which he’s already attempted, including The Magical Quest Starring Mickey Mouse, World of Illusion and Wally Bear and the NO! Gang.
