Super Mario Odyssey’s performance tops out at 900p/60 FPS

That buttery smooth frame rate.

There's been a lot of Super Mario Odyssey gameplay coming out around the internet lately, and while we wait on what is likely yet another must-have for Nintendo Switch fans, we now have exact figures on the game's performance. Once again, it's Digital Foundry to the rescue with one of their patented performance tests, which revealed that the game will top out at 900p/60 FPS in Docked Mode, and will drop down to 720p in Handheld Mode.

While 900p is not the most PR-friendly number, it doesn't seem to matter all that much given how smooth the game looks. The test shows only a few minute frame rate drops, and as they say in the video, you wouldn't even notice without the frame rate counter. The only noticeable drop is when switching to Snapshot Mode, which somewhat jarringly, cuts the framerate in half to 30 FPS.

The reason for this is that the game returns some of the detail to background objects that it sacrifices during gameplay to maintain 60 FPS, which if you're just trying to take a picture, doesn't matter as much as the visual quality of the photo.

Even if you aren't interested in the technical aspects of the video, it's just awesome to see Super Mario Odyssey in action. October 27th can't get here soon enough.
