Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS ‘DLC is coming to an end,’ says game director

It even looks like he suggested that the series might end soon.

Tomorrow at  2 PM PST / 5 PM EST, Nintendo will be broadcasting the final Nintendo Direct dedicated to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS. The event will be detailing Final Fantasy 7's Cloud, the latest addition to the game's fighter roster.

We will more than likely be seeing a release date for Cloud during the event, but the Smash Bros. focused Nintendo Direct might not be bringing the best news. Since the Direct was announced last week as the final Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS, fans have become concerned that Super Smash Bros. will not be seeing future DLC.

It appears as though concerns were warranted. Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS' game director Masahiro Sakurai has revealed that DLC for the game will be winding down soon. The reveal from Sakurai came during an interview session as part of the series “Making of Fire Emblem: 25 Years of Development Secrets” (via Dual Shockers) and went something like this.

Sakurai had been talking about the Super Smash Bros. series meeting an inevitable end (which likely won't occur as the game sells very well), it was during this conversation where he mentioned that DLC would be ending.

Interviewer: You do say that every time [about Smash Bros. games coming to an end], though, so I do wonder if maybe it’ll just keep on going forever.

Sakurai: And I’ll become the Smash craftsman? (laughs)

Interviewer: Yes. After all, including the DLC, you’ve been involved with Smash since the beginning.

Sakurai: Well, DLC is coming to an end soon, too, y’know.

The interview was translated from Japanese, so some things might have been lost in translation.
