IGN had the chance to play Supermassive’s highly-anticipated new adventure game Man of Medan. As the studio’s first big project since 2015’s smash success Until Dawn, expectations are high. The PlayStation 4 exclusive became an instant hit by bringing over the tense slasher movie genre into game form. Man of Medan is a multi-platform title and as such it’s poised to become an even bigger success.

This time, the developer is focusing on a brand-new feature of Man of Medan which wasn’t available in Until Dawn. Cooperative multiplayer. Experiencing tense horror games together with friends is undoubtedly going to elevate the game beyond the PS4 predecessor. The great part about their new game’s co-op aspect is that all five protagonists can be played by a real human player. It sounds promising to go through a scary adventure together with a band of friends, all trying to keep their character alive until the credits roll.

“The biggest thing that helps protect us [from griefing] is that you only play the story with a friend, said the executive producer. “It’s not matchmaking, and you’re never going to play with someone you don’t know. It has to be someone on your list of friends. We were very concerned that if people walked out of the story half-way through and didn’t carry on and you couldn’t find them again to finish the story, the one person is left hanging not knowing how that particular version of the story pans out. We’ve said before, but there’s so much branching in the plot. There’s much more than we’ve ever done.” -via Gamespot

In an interview with Gamespot, the developer also disclosed that they thought long and hard about conserving the intended tense atmosphere into co-op and to do that the team decided to only allow co-op with players on the friends list. This aims to prevent random online gamers from destroying the multiplayer experience.

Man of Medan is set to come out August 30 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
