Did anyone not see this coming? Harry Potter did it. Twilight did it. It's very popular with book-to-movie translations to turn the last book that wraps up the series into two movies. The Deathly Hallows and Breaking Dawn both had two parts. People will pay to see both. So it comes as no surprise that Lionsgate officially confirmed that the final installment of The Hunger Games will be split into two movies.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 will open in theaters November 21, 2014, and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 will open November 20, 2015. This news comes shortly after Lionsgate announced that Philip Seymour Hoffman was cast as Plutarch Heavensbee, a vital role in both the upcoming The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and Mockingjay.
The Hunger Games, released in March, took in $404 million in North America with $678 million worldwide. I'm sure DVD and Blu-ray sales will be throught the roof, as well. Catching Fire is set to go into production next month and is slated for a November 22, 2013 release.
