In February this year, we learned that last year’s action RPG The Surge was getting a sequel. Today, The Surge 2 has finally gotten something more substantial to show, in a new gameplay video at IGN. The video is fairly short at around 3 minutes but every second is worth it. No filler, no setup, just pure continuous gameplay. Check the video out!
The Surge 2 is a sequel to last years The Surge and is being done by the same developer, Deck 13. The team previously made another, similar action role-playing game, Lords of the Fallen, which many viewd as influenced by FromSoftware’s Souls series. While some similarities were clear, it offered plenty enough of an own character and stands on its own. Never ending comparisons to Souls games, the team having big ambitions and it being one of the biggest undertakings by the moderately sized developer, lead to a unique game with enough rough edges that it only got a lukewarm reception.
But the German developer continued to bite into the genre and released a new IP, incorporating what they have learned from Lords of the Fallen and improving, leading to The Surge. Immediately, it became a bigger hit among gamers and critics. So, it was expected that earlier this year we got confirmation that a sequel was in the works.
During this year’s E3, publisher Focus Home Interactive invited journalists from the gaming press and presented them an early sneak peek at the game. Now, regular folks got the chance to see a glimpse themselves, thanks to IGN uploading the video.
And what we’ve seen, is to our liking. We see an action scene set in a lush and green outdoor level, a mini-boss-type robot shooting a freaking laser, cutting a tree in half while chasing us with its intense glare, new finishing moves and enemy shields. Pretty good stuff for a short video.
As the developer Deck 13 states, The Surge 2 is not going to be a bland sequel. The team plans to improve, expand and change many parts, while keeping the things what fans liked about the first game:
The Surge 2 keeps what fans and critics loved about the original – hardcore combat utilizing a unique, dynamic limb targeting system and deep character progression – while also expanding greatly upon the formula. The Surge 2 takes place in a brand new environment: a sprawling, devastated city with larger and more ambitious level design, made possible by Deck13’s upgraded and improved engine. Combat is more brutal and tactical than ever, with even more options thanks to an expanded limb targeting system. In addition, more abilities, weapons, implants, and drones give players a vast arsenal to build their character with, in their fight against the array of diverse new enemies and bosses.
We are impressed with what we have read and seen so far about The Surge 2 and can’t wait till next year, when the game is set to release on PC, PS4 and Xbox One.
