Developer Hinterland released a new content update for their highly rated open-world survival game The Long Dark, dubbed Vigilante Flame. This update packs much more than just bug fixes. It adds a whole new area and overhauled major mechanics in the game. Check out the in-depth trailer for the Vigilante Flame update, where the developer showcases all the new cool stuff they put in their game.
The Long Dark’s story started way back in 2014, when Vancouver based independent developer Hinterland Games first released their project on Steam Early Access. It quickly became sort of a role model for other games, on how Early Access should work optimally with the creator continuously engaging with the player base, adding and refining the game steadily. Las August, the team finally released the final game out of Early Access but has since still continued to support their flagship game.
Set in the Canadian wilderness, The Long Dark pits players to survive in a cold, harsh and unforgiving environment. Alone, having survived a light-plane crash, it’s not only the elements one faces. Wild and dangerous forest animals like wolves can make quick work of you. An interesting aspect of The Long Dark was that it aimed to deliver a realistic world. There are no monsters, no magic or any other science-fiction ideas. It’s pure survival. Hunting for food, gathering materials, keeping yourself warm and fed.
This uniqueness of hand-crafted maps, focus on realism and the great talent of Hinterland Games, is what made The Long Dark one of the most highly reviewed games on Steam, survival genre and others. At a mighty 91% positive user reviews, it has become a must own for fans of the survival genre.
With this new content update called Vigilante Flame, The Long Dark receives an overhauled, more dynamic cooking system, a whole new area Hushed River Valley, Buffer Memories that try to expand the lore and a radial placement quick menu. All of which should be welcome additions to seasoned players and new fans alike.
