Survival Game SCUM is Out Now, Biggest Launch of Devolver Digital

UPDATE

We now learn from SCUM’s official Twitter that the game sold over 250k copies in less than 24 hours.

Original Story

SCUM, the hardcore multiplayer survival action released yesterday on Steam Early Access and publisher Developer Digital is mighty happy already, as SCUM marks the biggest game launch in the publisher’s history.

Developed by Gamepires, a relatively small developer mostly known for B-tier action-racing games, SCUM aimed to grab the attention of players by going full in on complex game mechanics such as metabolism, cover and more. We previously reported how insane and minute some of the details in SCUM can get, and it turned out that the developer’s gamble of rejecting dumbing down a game to become a hit worked out.

Devolver sadly didn’t share any numbers but going by the concurrent player figures at Steam Charts, we can see that close to 40,000 users are playing SCUM at the moment, and rising. That marks SCUM’s entry into the Top 10 games currently played on Steam. A very impressive feat for any game.

While high player counts and occupying the first spot on current Top Sellers is great news, what’s more promising for the longevity of SCUM are the actual user experiences. Currently, SCUM is receiving relatively good user reviews on Steam but when you consider that the game is in Early Access, the outlook of improvements and content updates is painting a nice picture. And there is no doubt that developer Gamepires will work extensively on their new game. It marks an important milestone for the small game studio, possibly opening up a long and successful future.

The news might also come as a surprise to user who follow Devolver Digital. The Texas-based publisher has enabled a huge amount of indie games to be released over the past nine years. Titles such as, Shadow Warrior 1 & 2, Hotline Miami, The Talos Principle, Enter the Gungeon and many more have proven the publisher’s good taste in backing indie devs.

SCUM is available now on Steam as an Early Access title for only $19.99.
