System Shock dives into Cyberspace and shows gory tech in new trailers

Gib Gibs

Nightdive Studios has released not one but two new trailers for the remake of System Shock. The upcoming action-RPG is slated to come out for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One this year. Check out the first look at the redesigned Cyberspace portion here!

One of the most influential FPS games of all time, System Shock is getting a long-overdue remake. Not only is the 1994 original in dire need of a visual overhaul but even the gameplay mechanics themselves have aged anything but gracefully. It’s understandable since developers hadn’t figured out the blueprint yet for 3D gaming in and on itself.

Factor in that System Shock mixed both first-person shooting and RPG in one package, and it becomes clear that many parts of the game’s design are archaic by today’s standards. Leave it to retro lovers and extraordinarily talented people at Nightdive Studios to bring back this classic in a way it deserves.

You’re a renowned hacker, the most notorious cyberspace thief in the corporate world. Caught during a risky break-in, you become indentured to a greedy TriOptimum executive. After six months in a healing coma, you awaken to the twisted aftermath of a terrible disaster. Where are the surgeons? Why is the station in such disrepair? Slowly, the chilling realization that something is very wrong creeps over you.

Yes, the visuals are naturally the first thing that stands out. It’s an expectedly huge leap over the pixelated presentation of the original. Great model fidelity, detailed textures, and immersive lighting lead to a striking package. It’s truly a vivid game where colors are exploding all around you.

Likewise, a key gameplay aspect has also seen a notable upgrade in the form of a dismemberment model. Yes, gibs are back! In a second trailer, we can see the awesome enemy dismemberment model in glorious action. It’s gratuitous but gels very well with the overall tone and style of the System Shock remake.
