System Shock’s original source code is going to be released to the public

If you're an aspiring developer trying to break into an ultra-competitive industry, Developer Night Dive Studios is tossing you a bone. CEO Steven Kick announced via his Twitter account that the company would be releasing the source code of the original System Shock to the public, completely free.

Here's the tweet:

System Shock is one of the most influential games of all-time, serving as the inspiration for the modern classic, BioShock, and representing one of, if not, the first hybrid FPS/RPGs. That combination has become a staple in modern AAA development and has proven to be quite profitable across the board.

As far as money goes, it makes sense for Night Dive to release the original code since it is no longer a profitable venture for them, given the presence of the Enhanced Edition across several digital distributors. For modders, it represents yet another tool for them to express their creativity, and given the game's complex systems, it would serve as a great portfolio piece for anyone looking to break into the industry.
