It seems today, that all you see — sorry, wrong show. Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane's new movie, Ted, debuted this weekend to great reviews. And it showed in the box office. Ted debuted to $54.1 million at the domestic box office, setting the record for the best showing ever for an original R-rated comedy. The record was previously set by The Hangover in 2009.
The comedy, starring Mark Wahlberg and Mila Kunis, is the story of John Bennett (Wahlberg), who as his child had his teddy bear (MacFarlane) come to life after making a wish. Now as an adult, he has to deal with the result of Ted never wanting to leave his side when his girlfriend expects more from their relationship. It was Seth MacFarlane's first time as writer, director, and voice of Ted, and needless to say, it looks like he did a hell of a job.
Ted beat out Magic Mike ($39.2 mil) and Tyler Perry's Madea's Witness Protection ($26.4 mil) at the box office. On Rotten Tomatoes, Ted has a respectable score of 69%, and 87% of audience members have liked it, receiving an average rating of 4.2/5 from over 68,000 ratings. Metacritic has Ted at a critic score of 62/100, while their users gave it a 75 based on 39 ratings.
