Sony's reboot/reimagining of Spider-Man with a darker tone has gotten off to a terrific start. Looks like he has spun a web and all that got caught in it was cash. In its first weekend of release overseas, The Amazing Spider-Man took in $50.2 million from 13 overseas markets. Korea and Japan were the two biggest markets for it; Korea brought in $13.4 million on 1,213 screens and Japan $11.4 million on 1,092 screens.
The Amazing Spider-Man is once again telling the origin tale of how Peter Parker became Spider-Man, but with new characters and new story elements. Gone is the red-haired Mary Jane, in is Emma Stone as Peter Parkers first love, Gwen Stacy. Spidey is being played by Andrew Garfield (The Social Network), and he is bringing the attitude back to Spider-Man. In the trailers, you can see him crackin' jokes as he disposes criminals and tells police officers how to do their jobs.
The film also stars Denis Leary as Captain Stacy (police officer and Gwen's father), Martin Sheen as Uncle Ben, and Rhys Ifans (Little Nicky) as Dr. Curt Connors, or known by his villain name: The Lizard. Yup, that's right — the villain in this one is none other than The Lizard. What's also making this reboot so different from the other Tobey Maguire movies is that they're exploring what happened to Peter Parker's parents, and it looks like it has something to do with Oscorp Industries, where Dr. Connors and Peter's dad worked together.
Overall, the movie looks completely different from the others, and judging from box office numbers, it's going to be a big hit. Oh, and he makes his web shooters! He freakin' makes them! He does whatever a spider can!
The Amazing Spider-Man releases tomorrow, July 3 2012.
