The ending of the Assassin's Creed movie that moviegoers saw at the theaters was not the one the creators of the film had in mind, it has now been revealed that the intended ending would have been very different.
Spoilers for the Assassin's Creed film follows under this video, you have been warned!
In the theatrical version, the movie ends with a grand escape from the Templar facility where Callum Lynch and the other Assassins are being held. A majority of the important Assassins, most of the ones that the viewers got to know, manage to escape with Lynch and then travel to London to kill the leader of this facility while stealing a piece of Eden. This ending also implies that they go on to create their own Brotherhood when the movie ends. That was, however, not how the directors intended for the movie to end, not at all.
As reported by Collider, the film originally had a much darker and sadder ending. Director Justin Kurzel and editor Christopher Tellefsen explain in the clip above that they originally planned for Lynch to be the only surviving Assassin, that everyone else died when they tried to break out, making it difficult to reestablish the Brotherhood. That did not sit too well with the test audiences who thought it was too sad an ending and that killing off almost everyone they knew wouldn't set it up that well for any sequels, so they changed it to what we saw in theaters.
The full alternate ending will probably be available in the Assassin's Creed home video release which will also come with 90 minutes of bonus footage. It arrived in digital stores March 10 and comes to Blu-ray/DVD on March 21.
What do you think about this darker, sadder ending? Would it have made the movie better or was it fine the way we saw it? I'm all for a darker and sadder ending and look forward to the seeing it for myself. Let us know what you think in the comment section bellow.
