The Batman’s production delayed into 2018; Ben Affleck goes through rehab for alcohol addiction

The development for the first standalone Batman film since Christopher Nolan's trilogy has been a bit muddy, to say the least. The script has reportedly had some issues (not completely out of the norm when developing a film) and Ben Affleck stepped away from directing. Luckily, things started to go more smoothly last month when Matt Reeves stepped in to helm the project. Everyone's satisfied with the script (reportedly) and things sound pretty great!

Sadly, due to Reeves' obligations to the upcoming Planet of the Apes film, The Batman will remain on hold until 2018 at the earliest. Reeves will be tied down until June which means you shouldn't believe any casting rumors prior to that time as he will be way too busy editing Apes.

Additionally, Ben Affleck has revealed that he has been in rehab for a drinking problem. A source that spoke with Entertainment Weekly revealed this hasn't affected his involvement in The Batman as he's still developing a script alongside Geoff Johns. What exactly caused the drinking issues remains a mystery but it could have spawned from his family issues, the critical reception of some of his movies like Live By Night, and the stress of The Batman and the aforementioned Live By Night. You can read his statement below.

I have completed treatment for alcohol addiction; something I've dealt with in the past and will continue to confront. I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be. I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step. I'm lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I've done the work I set out to do. This was the first of many steps being taken towards a positive recovery.

Our thoughts go out to Ben Affleck and his friends and family as they deal with this difficult time. Affleck will next appear as Batman in Justice League which releases on November 17th, 2017.
