Sony recently released the digital download records for PlayStation platforms in March 2016. Among other trends, the month demonstrates the continued popularity of The Division, the power of Dark Souls hype, and the influence of flash sales.
To the surprise of nobody, Tom Clancy’s The Division topped PS4’s March downloads. After all, the game sold through $330 million worth of copies in its first week, shattering Ubisoft’s sales records and just beating out the launch of its spiritual competitor, Destiny.
2D Dark Souls-inspired action game Salt and Sanctuary followed The Division in the number-two spot on PS4. The game’s stellar visuals and combat won the day, but the hype surrounding Dark Souls 3’s upcoming launch also undoubtedly gave it a boost. Aside from replaying Dark Souls, there’s no better tide-me-over than Ska Studio’s latest. Meanwhile, Rocket League kept its momentum in third, which can be attributed to the upcoming release of its basketball mode.
PS3 digital downloads were led by Alice: Madness Returns, the arguable forerunner of the latest PlayStation flash sale. Madness Returns was 90 percent off throughout the sale, which seems to have given it a big enough boost to surpass The Last of Us and Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune in downloads for the month.
PS Vita downloads were less surprising: The Jak and Daxter HD collection came in at first, with Assassin’s Creed 3: Liberation and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth close behind. The most-downloaded PlayStation classics, were Bully, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas and Fatal Frame 3: Tormented.
Note that these rankings reflect download count, not sales count. You can view the full listings over on the PlayStation Blog.
