Playing in a group, the Holy Trinity isn't a requirement for dungeons in The Elder Scrolls Online, but it is usually the "most successful" party composition. For those unfamiliar, the Holy Trinity is your standard party consisting of a tank, healer, and usually different types of DPS. While most traditional MMOs still rely on this combination, more and more are beginning to ditch it, or tweak it. After all, no one wants to be a healer.
"You certainly can have the Holy Trinity, or you can all go stealth," Bethesda told me at PAX during my playthrough of The Elder Scrolls Online. "It's all doable, but usually the most successful are the people that go the Trinity."
"Usually you have to do some tricky things, some workaround if you're not going that," the spokesperson explained. The reason a workaround is even possible is because of how the game's combat actually works.
"In order to tank all you need to do is be able to defend. So basically the way tanking works is you encourage a guy to attack you either by using a one-handed sword and shield or a fighter skill taunting ability," she said. "You'll be fighting eight guys at a time in a dungeon, [the tank] can probably take three, so everyone else is going to have to deal with what you're not tanking."
I haven't yet had the opportunity to partake in a dungeon but it certainly sounds like there will be multiple ways to complete it. Tanking sounds anything but traditional so even though we might be stuck with the Holy Trinity, it will put a different spin on it.
