The Evil Within patches letterbox and difficulty setting

The horror of playing in letterbox format is finally over for fans of The Evil Within. Bethesda announced it is patching the game for console owners, giving players the option to do away with the 2:35:1 aspect ratio, as well as a few tweaks to the difficulty.

Many gamers complained about the letterboxing, which forced you to play with black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Developers Tango Gameworks intended for the format to aid players with the darker environments, and evoke a cinematic feel for the game.

The patch also makes a few changes to the game's "casual" difficulty, which was anything but. The setting promises to dish out more ammo for poor Sebastian, and include some adjustments to the game's health bar.

The letterbox ratio honestly never bothered me, but I've been itching to dive back into Evil Within for a 2nd playthrough, so this is some nice incentive. It also allows for us to try out all of the game's DLC at once, including The Executioner, The Assignment, and The Consequence, which may give us a chance to piece together the game's psychedelic plotline.

In case you missed it, we really enjoyed our time with The Evil Within, which put Resident Evil brainchild Shinji Mikami back in the driver's seat of the survival horror genre.

You can download the patch right now on Xbox One, Playstation 4, Xbox 360, PS3, and PC.
