The Evil Within Steam update lets you play in 60FPS, disable black bars

New patch now available on Steam

A new update to the Steam version of The Evil Within has been released, unlocking the 60 frames per second setting while also giving players the option to disable the letterbox "black bars."

Previously, the only way to play The Evil Within at 60 frames per second was to enter a "cheat" code into the debug command line which had to be unlocked outside of the game. With the update, players "with high-end PCs" are now able to just go into their settings and toggle between the game running with a 30FPS cap or 60FPS cap.

Although I appreciate the cinematic aspect that the letterbox bars provide, some find the black bars that run along the top and bottom of the screen to be a bit annoying. You now have the option to remove them and maximize your full screen.

Below are the full patch notes for The Evil Within on Steam:

  • Frame lock settings added

    • In settings, you can now toggle between a 30 FPS and 60 FPS cap.
  • Letterbox setting

    • UI toggle to disable the letterbox bars
  • Fixes gameplay issues when running at >30 FPS
  • Fixes for visual issues associated with removing letterbox framing
  • Achievements now work when console is enabled
  • Fix for game starting in windowed mode on first run
  • Minor localization fixes
