Gary Ross, director of The Hunger Games, has chosen his next project. His first directing effort since The Hunger Games will be Disney's Peter and the Starcatchers — based on the novel of the same name by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson. There's no budget for the film yet, and they're waiting on the new draft of the script (due in early October), but Ross is looking to film it as quickly as possible in 2013.
Peter and the Starcatchers is a fantasy pirate adventure that is a prequel to Peter Pan, in spirit. It sort of provides a backstory. The novel was already adapted into a Broadway production and has done quite well. In it, Peter leads a group of orphaned boys who work as servants for King Zaraboff. He meets and befriends a mysterious girl named Molly, who tells him a story of how she is an apprentice Starcatchers. Starcatchers collect "starstuff" that falls to earth. It gives powers to those that find it, such as flying. Molly and Peter must keep it away from the evil pirate Black Stache (Captain Hook).
Most of the characters in the novel are new to the story, but you'll definitely come across people you're familiar with. We will update you as more details emerge.
