The Interview becomes Sony’s #1 online film of all time

After all this controversy, The Interview has become Sony Pictures' #1 online film of all time. The comedy that revolves around the assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong-un and stars James Franco and Seth Rogen, made just $5 million in its limited theatrical release, but brought in $31 million across 4.3 million transactions from VOD services (film rentals and sales) from December 24 to January 4.

In its first weekend on iTunes, YouTube Movies, Xbox Live, Google Play and Sony's SeeTheInterview.com ($5.99 to stream the rental, $14.99 to purchase), The Interview made $15 million. Other VOD affiliates came in later — the big boys like DirecTV, Comcast and more.

What's funny is that I'm not even sure The Interview would have made this much in a normal theatrical release. So demands from hackers and threats of terrorism might have actually helped the film.

Did you see The Interview? What did you think?
