The Interview, which is Sony's #1 online film of all-time, is coming to Netflix. The controversial film, starring James Franco and Seth Rogen as journalists assigned to assassinate North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, has been nothing but controversial since Sony was hacked and theaters were threatened with attack if they showed the film. It was only shown in smaller theaters on online with on-demand services.
The biggest online streaming service will soon be getting The Interview a month after the film originally released. Variety is reporting that Netflix will start streaming the movie in the U.S. and Canada on January 24.
The Interview has made an estimated $46 million from theater releases and online rentals, but with a production budget of $44 millionĀ and a marketing budget of $30 million, The Interview is about $28 million in the red. It's not likely that Netflix's exclusive SVOD rights to The Interview will make up that extra $28 million. But I'd bet that Sony is happy with anything right about now.
