The Joker is an ‘integral’ part of Injustice: Gods Among Us’ story

Despite all of the character reveals for Injustice: Gods Among Us, the game's story remains largely a mystery. For reasons we do not know yet, we have all of these characters —  The Joker, Green Arrow, Batman, Cyborg, The Flash, Harley Quinn, Nightwing, Solomon Grundy, Superman, Catwoman and Wonder Woman — brought together in a universe fighting against one another.

Warner Bros. and developer NetherRealm has continuously told us that Injustice: Gods Among Us blurs the line between good and evil. Characters we grew up thinking were good (Superman, for instance) might have some twists. We don't know what those twists are quite yet, or how all of these characters will interact, but NetherRealm's Ed Boon sure is excited for people to see the story.

One thing we do know for sure, however, is that that The Joker — who was recently revealed as a playable character — will have an "integral" role in the story of Injustice: Gods Among Us.

"The Joker is front and center on the front of our box and there's reason he's front and center," Injustice: Gods Among Us producer Hector Sanchez hinted to us.

"He's a very integral part of our storyline in the game and is kind of the center piece of what's going on," he added. "Knowing how chaotic The Joker's personality is, you can imagine how loopy and out of this world our story is."

Sanchez wouldn't go into many other details or spoilers about the story, but did give away that they've had "collaboration" with Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti from DC.

"They kind of helped us mold the story and mold the kind of dialogue of the characters in the story as well," he explained. "We're not talking too much about it, but there are clues out there and bits and pieces with the arenas that we've announced, with the characters we're announced. We've released a bunch of trailers so the story is starting to come together and make sense. We think around January or February [2013] people are going to really start figuring it out."

"We're really proud of it," he concluded. "I think that's going to be the biggest part of this game, the story. Why are these people fighting against each other? And how are they fighting each other? How can Selena touch Superman?"

Needless to say, in our preview of our game Harley Quinn definitely held her own against Superman. Looks like we'll have to wait a little longer before we find out why. Injustice: Gods Among Us is set to release in April 2013 on Xbox 360, PS3, and Wii U.
