Sony hates us. This is the only answer I have for what they're doing to us with The Last Guardian. The roller coaster goes like this: The Last Guardian is in development, trademark abandoned, just kidding (it was renewed a couple days later), back to work, trademark abandoned, back in development.
In December, the game creator Fumito Ueda said the The Last Guardian was in development "under new conditions," then the trademark expired yesterday. Now, Videogamer is claiming that Sony said that the game is still in development, but won't comment on the trademark's expiration.
What do we know now? The trademark has yet to be picked up, but Sony is trying to keep our hopes up. The hypothesis that The Last Guardian would be coming under a new name is still standing strong. It's our only hope.
