The Last of Us 2 accidentally outed by Naughty Dog

Whoops. Did Naughty Dog just confirm a sequel to The Last of Us?

There's been plenty of speculation surrounding the potential for a sequel to 2013's critically acclaimed game The Last of Us, but in a recent livestream this week, developer Naughty Dog may have actually confirmed it.

First noticed by Gamepur, writer Josh Scherr, alongside community strategist Eric Monacelli and lead animator Eric Baldwin, let it slip that a sequel to The Last of Us is indeed on the way.

"All the facial animation in the Uncharted series was led up by Eric, here," he said, "and [on] the first The Last of Us. Uh, did I say the first The Last of Us?”

Check out the clip from the livestream below.

Okay, so it's not an official announcement, but judging by the reaction when they realize the slip up, it's pretty much all, but confirmed that a sequel to The Last of Us is on the way — or at least in the works. Of course, it's possible he was distinguishing between the original base game and the expansion, Left Behind, which followed it, but that seems unlikely given how flustered he appears, repeating himself and tripping over his words as he tries to hide the massive news he just leaked.

This isn't the first we've heard talk of a sequel to The Last of Us. Earlier this year, voice actor Nolan North, the voice of David in the game, also slipped up and said Naughty Dog was working on The Last of Us 2; however, Troy Baker, who played Joel in the game, quickly shot down rumors by claiming he "knows nothing" about a sequel.

For Naughty Dog's part, the developer has been open to a sequel, and have even acknowledged they've kicked around a few ideas for a potential sequel. However, nothing official has come of it as of yet. With Uncharted 4: A Thief's End coming in early 2016, I wouldn't expect to hear anything official about Naughty Dog's next project until next year.
