The Last of Us: Left Behind digital standalone coming this month

The Last of Us' emotionally-charged DLC to be sold on its own

Naughty Dog has announced that The Last of Us' story-driven downloadable content, Left Behind, will be released as a standalone download this month.

Starting May 12th, Left Behind will be available as a digital standalone purchase from the PlayStation Store for $9.99. It'll be available for both PS4 and PS3.

Obviously, if you're planning on buying a PlayStation 4, you'll get The Last of Us: Remastered — which already includes the Left Behind DLC — for free. So this is really for people who probably purchased the original game on PlayStation 3 and never bothered to pick up Left Behind.

If you're part of that group, I highly recommend checking it out. Although a bit short in length, Left Behind's story is absolutely captivating. Taking place during the main narrative arc of The Last of Us (so I recommend playing the main campaign first), Left Behind offers prequel segments that follow Ellie and her friend Riley as they sneak out of boarding school to visit an abandoned mall. Like the main story, this chunk of DLC is incredibly emotional.

Additionally, Naughty Dog has included a two hour trial of the Factions Multiplayer mode with built-in upgrade paths through the in-game store. Here are all the different upgrade possibilities after you already own the Left Behind standalone.
