As is standard with most book to movie or game to movie adaptations, there just isn't enough time to be able to tell every key plot point, when you have give or take 2 hours of screen time to work with. And of course, the same can be said about the newly announced movie adaptation of The Last of Us.
Speaking to MCV, Neil Druckmann, the writer of the movie, has stated that even though the movie will still largely focus on Joel and Ellie, the two key characters of the game, they will have to make some cuts in order to fit the story into a feature movie length.
In two hours you can't tell the same kind of story that you can in a game like The Last of Us, which is 15 hours, I'm in the middle of it now, and it's been super difficult because there's so much that happens in The Last of Us – even just in the cinematics – that can't fit in a film, let alone all the gameplay in-between and dialogue.
Druckmann also pointed out that since so much has to be cut or reworked, the plot may differ significantly from its video game counterpart, however still focusing largely on the relationship between Joel and Ellie.
