Bringing The Last of Us: Remastered to PS4 has had an impact on Uncharted 4's development, Naughty Dog community strategist Arney Meyer has admitted.
In a good way, that is. Don't worry, Uncharted 4 isn't getting delayed (at least not to my knowledge). I don't even think it has a release date.
Rather, Naughty Dog has benefitted greatly from bringing the former PS3-exclusive to PS4. And I'm not just talkinga bout lining the pockets of Sony with gobs of cash. It's more than simple cash grab.
For Naughty Dog, The Last of Us: Remastered allowed them to test out the PS4 engine and make improvements in their development technique ahead of Uncharted 4.
"One of the reasons we did want to do The Last of Us: Remastered is that it helped us test our PS4 engine and our tools pipeline that we had been working on for Uncharted 4," Meyer explained in an interview with PlayStation Access. "And one of the best ways to do that is to put a full game out. Since we basically had a full game ready to do that, it helped us make some advances on our PS4 engine development."
"So in the long run it will help us on Uncharted 4," he said.
The Last of Us: Remastered is set to release for PS4 on July 29. It will run in 1080p at 60 frames per second, while also giving users the option to play in locked 30 frames per second. Naughty Dog has assured the reason for this is to give players an experience "as close to the original" PS3 version as possible. Having said that, the challenges Naughty Dog presumably faced with getting a smooth 60 frames per second with The Last of Us have hopefully allowed for a much smoother development process for Uncharted 4.
