Canadian studio Hinterland launched a Kickstarter campaign today for The Long Dark, a first-person survival simulation set in the Northern wilderness.
Hinterland consists of a bunch of industry veterans who have worked on prominent triple-A titles. That includes work for companies such as Ubisoft Montreal, Volition, Riot Games, and BioWare. This is their first project as the indie studio, and they need $200,000 in crowdfunding to make it happen.
The Kickstarter page describes The Long Dark as "thoughtful," with a mature story and "survival sandbox gameplay" that lasts "dozens of hours." The game explores life in a post-disaster world where people can no longer rely on the technology that drives society and everyday life.
The Long Dark also emphasizes exploration over "shooting or thoughtless killing." Hinterland will release it as a series of episodes for PC, Mac, and Linux. It's expected to launch in late 2014.
