The Muppets sequel titled ‘The Muppets … Again!’; gets first images, synopsis and release date

"Together again. Gee it's good to be together again!" – Kermit the Frog (The Muppets Take Manhattan)

The revitalization of The Muppets continued today when Disney sent out a press release for the sequel. In it, Disney revealed the first images, the sequel's title and the plot synopsis. Titled The Muppets … Again!, filming is underway in London.

The Muppets … Again! is a global adventure starring Ricky Gervais, Ty Burrell and Tina Fey, all adding to the mayhem that usually comes with Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy and the rest of the Muppets. And as you can see from the picture, Walter — a new Muppet introduced in the 2011 hit starring Jason Segel and Amy Adams — will also be in the sequel. No word on whether Segel and Adams will have a cameo, but it's good to see they're keeping continuity with Walter returning after playing such an important role in the last film.

So what will The Muppets … Again! be about? The official synopsis is:

Disney’s “The Muppets …Again!” takes the entire Muppets gang on a global tour, selling out grand theaters in some of Europe’s most exciting destinations, including Berlin, Madrid and London. But mayhem follows the Muppets overseas, as they find themselves unwittingly entangled in an international crime caper headed by Constantine—the World’s Number One Criminal and a dead ringer for Kermit—and his dastardly sidekick Dominic, aka Number Two, portrayed by Ricky Gervais, creator of “Derek” and the Golden Globe®- and Emmy®-winning series “The Office” and “Extras.” The film stars Golden Globe-, Emmy- and SAG Award®-winning actress and writer Tina Fey (“30 Rock,” “Mean Girls,” “Date Night”) as Nadya, a feisty prison guard, and Emmy Award winner Ty Burrell (TV’s “Modern Family”) as Interpol agent Jean Pierre Napoleon.

So there you have it. It looks like Ricky Gervais is a villain, while Tina Fey and Ty Burrell will both be helping Kermit. There will also be a case of mistaken identity, with the criminal Constantine looking just like Kermit.

This post wouldn't be complete without a quote from Kermit the Frog, who said, "This movie takes us places we've never been before. And trust me — this frog has never seen so much international flavor. I think audiences will eat it up — the entertainment, that is."

I'm sure frog legs will be mentioned in the movie at some point; it is Europe after all. But I wonder if there will be a Doc Hopper's Frog Legs reference…

The Muppets … Again! is set to release in theaters on March 21, 2014.
