After the long and universe saving Mass Effect trilogy, those who survived Shepard’s crew need some time to relax; fighting the Reapers can’t come easy. Thus, the next Mass Effect game will have nothing to do with Shepard or his cronies. In an interview with BioWare’s Mac Walter by Complex.com, he mentioned:
Well, I can’t get into details, but the idea is that we have agreed to tell a story that doesn’t relate necessarily to any of the Shepard events at all, whatsoever. Beyond that, that’s what we’ve been deciding for awhile. But throughout it all, one of the key things is that it has to be Mass Effect. It can’t just feel like a spin-off. It has to feel like a Mass Effect game at its heart, at its core. Just without the Shepard character or the Shepard specific companions.
So it would seem that BioWare is doing everything in their power to keep this Mass Effect game as similar to the previous Mass Effect games as possible but with a clean slate cast. The key word in Mac’s quote is the word “necessarily.” This tells us that Shepard’s heroics could have a reflection upon the plot but nothing is definite. We don’t even know where this game will fall on the Mass Effect time line – it’s all too soon to know. All that is certain is that we’re getting all new companions.
