While it isn't much of a surprise given what we saw yesterday from the Nintendo Switch reveal, we can now say for sure that Nintendo's upcoming console/portable hybrid will not have the ability to play Wii U discs or 3DS cartridges. In an interview with the Big N, Famitsu confirmed the news answering one of everyone's biggest questions.
However, this does not exclude the possibility of digital games being compatible, but Nintendo did not confirm that detail. What they did confirm is that the Switch will come with "two Joy-Con controllers, that is the left and right Joy-Con controllers, will be included in the package."
There also does not appear to be an end in sight quite yet for the 3DS, especially given the imminent launch of Pokemon Sun and Moon, arguably the handheld's biggest franchise. Given that the Switch is portable, it stands to reason that Nintendo may not see an immediate need to release another handheld platform until (or if) they feel like they need to.
