According to a report today by Thosegamers, the PlayStation 3 has been officially discontinued in New Zealand. Originally noted on Mighty Ape Games Facebook page, which has since been taken down, the console will no longer be shipped to New Zealand and will not be available once the current stock is sold out.
The post is most likely removed because Sony got a little upset with their announcement being ruined, but a screen shot can be seen below. The statement issued to Thosegamers reads:
"SCENZ will not be shipping anymore PlayStation 3 consoles to its retailers. However the platform is still available in retail outlets throughout NZ and being supported with peripherals, great new releases and back catalogue software."
Of course, this is only New Zealand but still, the end is near for other markets as well which is to be expected. After all, it's been two years since the PS4 released and this was an expected move with the recent announcements of games like Call of Duty Black Ops 3 not having a campaign on the PS3 or Xbox 360. Also, remember that Xbox 360's contract with EA is only through the 2017 games which release in mid 2016 so we may hear this as well about the Xbox 360 in about a year or so.
Whether you are PlayStation or Xbox fan, we all appreciate and respect the competition and the discontinuation of the PS3 is a huge deal; it's definitely an end to an era. Ok, so it's reminiscing time. What is your favorite PS3 game or memory? Let us know below.
