The PlayStation 5 console was supposed to be even larger

When the PlayStation 5 was revealed earlier this summer, no one knew quite how big it would actually be. Everyone was still focused on the pretty bulky look of the Xbox Series X but now, we know the PlayStation 5 is bigger. As reviewers unboxed the console, they were quick to note how heavy and insanely large it is.

The size of Sony’s next-generation console took many people aback but… it was almost bigger. In an interview with Washington Post, Yujin Morisawa, the designer of the PlayStation 5, was told to dial back on the size of the console.

“I didn’t know what to expect in the beginning. I knew it was going to be larger because I know how much power there was going to be, so I knew how much air flow you would need and how much space for a heat sink. In the beginning, when I started drawing, it was much larger even though I didn’t know what engineering was going to do. It’s kind of funny that engineering actually told me it’s too big. So, I actually had to shrink it down a little bit from the first drawing,” said Morisawa.

“We wanted to get it much smaller, so it’s the perfect size right now. If I made it thinner, there would be less air flow to it. It would disturb the player while they are playing. Form-factor wise, I drew a perfect line around it and tried hit the perfect size.”

Morisawa also teased that there may be some hidden easter eggs within/on the PlayStation 5. Fans have already noticed the PlayStation symbols in a small pattern on the grip of the DualSense controller. Morisawa goes into much more detail about the design of the console in the WaPo interview. We highly recommend giving the whole thing a read.

The PlayStation 5 will release this week on November 12th. You can also check out our review of Spider-Man: Miles Morales which releases on PS4 and PS5 the same day.
