The PS4’s supply shortage is breaking Jack Tretton’s heart, and maybe his wallet too

Presdent and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) Jack Tretton is heartbroken over the PlayStation 4 supply shortages in the United States — probably because he isn't getting that $400 right now.

While retailers have slowly been getting new PS4 shipments in, Sony's console is flying off the shelves faster than they can supply them. Some believe it's due to Sony withholding stock of its console, which Tretton denied when speaking on the official Sony podcast.

"You have competition out there," Tretton said. "There are lots of things that people can spend money on, especially during the holidays; and the holidays only come around once a year, so that’s really when you want to take advantage of the market opportunity…

"It breaks my heart if somebody’s got $400 in their hand and they want one and we can’t sell them one,” he added. I'm sure it does, Jack. I'm sure it does.

As of December 1st, Sony had sold through 2.1 million PS4 consoles across the world. It released first in the United States where it went on to sell over one million units in just the first 24 hours. Since then sales have likely been hampered due to lack of supply.

Toys 'R' Us recently announced that it will release its next wave of PS4 consoles this Wednesday, available online only, while supplies last. Unfortunately, we don't know how many systems they will have available.
