The fact that the Microsoft exclusive game ReCore will only cost $40 has raised a couple eyebrows. Why would a brand new game be so cheap? Xbox marketing manager Aaron Greenberg has stepped up to explain the reason behind the low price.
While making an appearance at TXR Podcast, Greenberg explained to the listeners why ReCore will cost $20 less than most, if not every, AAA game out there. According to Greenberg, the low price is due to the fact that ReCore is a new franchise that has yet to prove itself to gamers. Even though the mastermind behind Mega-Man and industry veteran Keiji Inafune is one of the main men behind ReCore, it's still a new project ReCore needs to prove itself. Greenberg also said that they are launching ReCore in September as the first major release leading up to the holiday season which hopefully will help gamers notice it.
"With new IP like that…ideally, launch timing matters a lot. So that's why you're seeing us launch it as our first title of the season; it's coming in September. So getting out early. The second thing is it doesn't have an existing base of fans. So we have to build that fan base. Rightly so, [gamers] are very thoughtful about, 'Where do I want to spend my money?, 'What games do I want to buy? So we kind of have to earn their vote; we have to earn their trust; we have to earn their dollar. We wanted there to be no barriers. We wanted to be able to give you a great AAA that gives you $60 of value but if you aren't sure, not let that be the barrier of a tradeoff of, 'Hey there's a $60 game and there's this game.' We wanted you to be able to get in."
That's quite reasonable actually, ReCore is a new IP that doesn't have an existing fan base and needs to prove itself and having it priced at $60 might make a lot of gamers shy away from it and spend it on a franchise they know they will like instead of a new one, now they can pick up both. Having it cost $40 instead of $60 makes more people buy it and the chance for profit and a ReCore 2 gets higher, it's a win-win situation.
"So that's why we priced it at $40. We hope that will increase its chances of having success as a new IP"
ReCore is scheduled for September 13 for Xbox One and PC and it will also be a Xbox Play Anywhere title, meaning that you buy it on one platform and play it on both.
