The sausage fest is ending in Rust

Time for some diversity!

Garry Newman, the man responsible for Garry's Mod and Rust, has taken to the Facepunch Studios developers blog to comment on the upcoming additions to Rust. Along with new gear, items and changes to the Steam Inventory, female models are being added to the game.

Female models aren't in the Early Access version of the game, they are only available to administrators — who will only be female during testing. "We still have some stuff to work out, like making alternate clothing models for her, but if you’re an admin on a server you’ll be the female model," wrote Newman on the devblog.

Rust has never allowed players to pick their characters looks, race or even dong size, it has all been decided by the player's Steam ID and female models won't work any differently. Everyone is subject to their Steam ID and will start the game off naked, without picking a single aspect of their character.

"To clear up some confusion, when we it does go live you won’t get a choice of whether you’re female or male. We’re not 'taking the choice away' from you," explained Newman. "You never had a choice. A man’s voice coming out of a woman’s body is no more weird than an 8 year-old boy’s voice coming out of a man’s body."

The survival game has yet to make its full release, which is something the team at Facepunch is going to take advantage of – they have the time and the option to change or test things.

"The thing I guess to understand is that Rust is STILL in Early Access and we need to take advantage of that fact," he wrote. "This is the time for experimentation—because once it’s not in early access we won’t be able to do these kinds of game changing things—and we’ll wish we had."
