There is definitely more to Settlers of Catan than trading sheep's wool for wheat or wheat, but not much. The game revolves around building a community with the resources you have (bricks, lumber, wheat, wool, and ore). You can trade resources with other players and the game is eventually won by whomever reaches ten points first.
Points are calculated by amount of villages, cities, longest roads, and a couple other things – but you catch my drift. This game has no plot. There is honestly no plot to this game other than using strategy to hit ten points before anyone. Someone wants to make this into a movie.
This 'someone' is producer Gail Katz (she produced The Perfect Storm and Bicentennial Man, but nothing since). She has even already acquired the film and TV rights for the game. This is her reasoning:
“I’ve been wanting to see an adaptation of the game for years, ever since my Catan-obsessed college-aged kids introduced me to it,” said Katz in a statement. “The island of Catan is a vivid, visual, exciting and timeless world with classic themes and moral challenges that resonate today. There is a tremendous opportunity to take what people love about the game and its mythology as a starting point for the narrative.”
No. Just no. Not every game or book needs to become a movie. Go home and consider what you're doing Gail Katz. Play a round of Settlers for all I care (it's such a good game), but for f*&%$ sake don't ruin this game for me.
Sure, I get it. Someone made tons of money off of Battleship, but I don't want to think about some horrible Settlers movie every time someone busts out this magnificent game.
