As a native south Floridian, I'll never understand the desire for a basement. They're dark, dingy, and in most cases, the perfect spot to keep a victim tied up and captive. I've seen enough Law & Order to know you always check the basement.
In The Sims 4, though, basements are much more appealing. Added to the game as part of a free update today, basements allow you to add extra levels to your home.
"Using the new basement tool, you’re able to draw a basement from the floor above easily. Once it’s there, you can begin building with all of the normal build tools, making just about anything you can think of. We’ve had a lot of fun in the past few weeks building different things using the new basements and The Sims 4’s creative tools," EA boasts.
WIth the addition of basements, which can go two levels deep, the new total house size is expanded to six floors — double what it was before.
As for what you can put in these extra floors, EA specifically mentions pools: "Besides being able to create pools in basements, you’re also able to build pools adjacent to basements. That means a pool can be right up against the side of a basement, and if you make the pool’s walls out of glass, you’re basically making a giant human fish tank." For some reason when I think "giant human fish tank" my mind automatically goes to that glass enclosure that fills with water in The Cell.
On a less weird note, you can also turn your basement into a retail business. As you're probably well aware, the new Sims 4 Get to Work expansion will allow you to create your own unique retail business. You can open businesses like bakeries, clothing boutiques, art galleries, and bookstores. Today's update prepares the game should you eventually want to build a shop in your basement. Again, this is another one of those things that just sound creepy. I don't know any respectable lawful business that operates out of a basement.
So if you want to kidnap some victims or start a meth lab in The Sims 4, it sounds like you can now do so.
