The current state of Fallout 4's first rail gun
Popular Fallout 3 modder Zealotlee first revealed his planned Fallout 4 rail gun mod near the start of July, but only in a recent interview with Bethesda did he delve into the details of the project.
Zealotlee, or Peter Zaccagnino as he’s often known, is almost certainly the first Fallout 4 modder. He began designing his rail gun “a day or two after the reveal trailer came out,” immediately setting to work on concept art and basic sketches. He chose a railgun out of his fondness for real-world military models and the room for improvement left behind by the rail cannon he contributed to Fallout 3’s Project Nevada mod.
“What I noticed when reading about the players that were using it was that it just didn’t fit the Fallout aesthetic,” Zaccagnino said of his earlier work. “It was too sci-fi and futuristic for some and didn’t fit in with the rest of the world. I happened to agree. So I set out to make a weapon that had a classic look to it with a futuristic functionality.”

When Bethesda revealed Fallout 4’s extensive weapon customization at E3, Zaccagnino—and, one would imagine, all modders—went back to the drawing board with silver dollar eyes. “It would allow me to create an entire platform of weapons versus one single weapon which was going to behave like an energy light machine gun. Now there will be a sniper rifle, light machine gun, assault rifle, and many more!” he said.

Like all Fallout 4 PC mods, Zaccagnino’s rail gun will also eventually come to Xbox One and PlayStation 4, most likely in that order. However, the delayed development of the game’s mod tools may slow its release. If nothing else, modders will be able to think-tank and fiddle with the game’s default code before the tools release in 2016, though they will make actually implementing creations much easier.
