The UK Advertising Standards Agency has ruled that Aliens: Colonial Marines used misleading footage in advertising

Sega’s Aliens: Colonial Marines missed the mark – a mark set by fans months, even years, before the final product ever came to be thanks to some early, stunning gameplay footage that’s now under attacks from fans and the UK’s Advertising Standards Agency (ASA).

According to an OXM UK report, reddit user “subpardave” went to the ASA claiming that what is being shown in trailers and demos is not necessarily illustrative of the final product that’s boxed and sold to players; which ended up scoring a 5.5 “average” from us here at GameZone. The UK agency quickly turned to Sega, asking them to respond to the issue, which they did in a press release stating, “trailers used demo footage, created using the in-game engine,” but that they “weren’t aware of these issues when the trailers were produced, in some cases several months before release.”

In an attempt to resolve the matter, the UK Advertising Standards Agency released the following statement regarding Sega's response to the "attacks" if you will:

“Sega Europe acknowledged your objection that the trailers did not accurately reflect the final content of the game. They agreed to add a disclaimer, both on their website and in all relevant YouTube videos, which explains that the trailers depict footage of the demo versions of the game.”

This fiasco brings about a great point. With blockbuster-sized games like Grand Theft Auto 5 for instance, do you wait until you see actual gameplay footage before you’re sold, or are you swayed by a beautifully creative trailer or demo? Let us know by commenting below.
