Players anxious to finally experience the conclusion to gaming’s most influential episodic series won’t have to wait much longer. The new team that took on development duties for The Walking Dead: The Final Season has announced January 15 as the release date for the third Episode.
In a much more interesting turn of events, Skybound Games is the latest developer who partnered up with Epic on the PC by bringing The Walking Dead: The Final Season exclusively to the Epic Store on PC. What a surprise indeed and unlike other games that changed PC store locations before their release, The Walking Dead: The Final Season is in a unique spot as it is already halfway released on Steam.
Existing owners of the game on Steam can rest assured however, as Skybound Games is promising to honor those purchases by releasing the remainin two episodes for them as well. But for new purchases, users will only have the new Epic Store as a choice.
This is the latest, of what is looking like to become a regular occurrence, of games averting release on Steam in favor of the Epic Store. Notably, indie devs have announced their plans to make their games timed-exclusives or scrap their game’s Steam release entirely. With The Walking Dead: The Final Season we have a more traditional and bigger game getting under the Epic Store-exclusive umbrella.
There’s no doubt that the game has managed to stay in the minds of gamers but that was mostly for bad reasons such as the closure of the original developer and the subsequent resuscitation by Skybound Games. Whether this momentum will be enough to bring the masses to adopt yet another PC client remains to be seen.
One thing’s for sure however. Epic is set on becoming the first real competitor to Steam in a long time.
