The makers of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt really struck gold. CD Projekt Red has made over $8.5 million in just the first quarter of 2016, that's $8.5 million in just three months!
The total revenues from sales are about 87 million zł ($22.5 million) and the net profit landed on around 32.6 million zł ($8.5 million), which is quite a lot for a game that is almost a year old by now. Roughly 20.1 million zł ($5 million) came from their own online platform GOG.com.
This is saying a lot about the quality of The Witcher 3, a game that is a year old (May 2016), that it is still selling so well after the release. The release of the Heart of Stone DLC has also helped boost the sales, and CD Projek expects that the Blood & Wine DLC will keep the game going strong for a bit longer.
CD Projekt was actually losing money during the same quarter last year, so they are understandably happy for the success they have had with The Witcher 3. In a Polish article translated by redditor
KeyserSOhItsTaken it showed that Vice President Piotr Nielubowicz was pleased with the results, the translation has been altered a little bit by yours truly to make a bit more sense.
"Financial results in recent quarters testify to the fact that the release of the Witcher brought us to a whole new level of activity […] The first quarter of the current year is the third consecutive period of continuing strong sales of The Witcher, and of record-breaking revenues for the whole Capital Group."
The President of CD Projekt, Adam Kiciński believes that the strong sales can last for a long time to come, good RPGs sell well for a long time after all.
"Good RPG sell for years, and we can animate this sale in order to sustain the interest of the players. May 10 we announced the start of the second DLC, Blood and Wine, which will premiere on May 31, that is, in less than three weeks. We expect that the players as well as the industry journalists will appreciate the new content"
The Witcher Blood & Wine will be the last of Geralts adventures in, for now, but the developers wants to make a fourth The Witcher game some time in the future. After the release of Blood & Wine CD Projekt will put all focus on making their next game, Cyberpunk 2077.
