On May 19th, 2015 The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt released, only to become the became the best-selling game of May – with less than two weeks left in the month. While the game has been called Game of the Year for its storytelling, the DLC support that CD Projekt Red brought with the game was absolutely superb.
Wild Hunt released with two 'massive' expansions planned for the game, "Hearts of Stone" and "Blood and Wine," that promised to add 30-hours (or more) of gameplay to the game, as well as 16 pieces of free DLC.
Hearts of Stone released last year, bringing about 10-hours of gameplay to the game. This year, we can look forward to the release of Blood and Wine, which will bring 20-hours of gameplay, a new in-game region called Toussaint, and new quests for Geralt.
According to CD Projekt Red's Senior Story Writer Jakub Szamalek in an Italian language-based interview with Eurogamer (via OnlySP), Blood and Wine will mark the end for Geralt as a main character.
"With Blood and Wine will try to close, at least for a while, the universe of The Witcher. It will be the last adventure of Geralt as a main character. But beyond that there is still nothing written in stone. Blood and Wine will be our conclusion of the story of Geralt, then it's time to focus with all the energy of Cyberpunk 2077."
Witcher 3 enthusiasts, needn't be sad over the series taking a break (at least not sad yet). The upcoming expansion will "not particularly tied in closely" with Wild Hunt and will be a fresh new adventure players.
Szamalek went on to reveal that CD Projekt Red has "achieved something even better than the main game" with the expansion.
Blood and Wine will do something that Wild Hunt didn't achieve – "create a charismatic enemy" for players to beat. Seeing Wild Hunt as a "failure" when it comes to the game's main enemy, the developers have been hard at work creating a "unique and memorable opponent." Blood and Wine will offer a "rather complex story" that they believe "players will appreciate."
