In this new generation of consoles, the PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, a lot of concern has been placed on game resolution and frame rate. It might even seem like the focus is more on resolution than on frame rate. The frame rate is what keeps the game appearing smooth, which is interesting that it's been (somewhat) put on the back burner.
When interviewing developers these days the subject of game resolution and frame rate can no longer be ignored. So, when the game news World's Factory sat down with Jose Teixeira, the Visual Effects Artist at CD PROJEKT RED, they just had to ask about The Witcher 3's development on the PS4 and Xbox One. His response was this:
Ideally, we’re pushing for 30 frames per second. The resolution, honestly, it depends; we’re working on it, we’re trying to get it as high as possible. If we can make it at 1080P, sure, but I don’t know if it’s going to make it. To be honest, I really don’t know. Probably not. But for sure, we need it to run at a smooth frame rate, so at least 30 FPS.
We’re doing optimization right now and I have to say, it’s actually running quite well. To be honest, we were expecting a lot worse. When we first started playing on PS4 and XB1, we expected the game not to work at all, because it was so heavy, so we were expecting it to crash, but it’s actually running. It’s not quite there yet, but it’s running. So I think that with a little more optimization, I think we’ll get it running really well.
Looking at how detailed the game is, dropping to a 900P resolution isn't much of a surprise. If they were to bump it to 1080P on the PS4 or Xbox One it could come at a cost.
Framerate or resolution? How important is fluid gameplay to you? Will this keep you from purchasing the game?
