There is still hope for a Sunset Overdrive 2

Hope is the first step on the road to disappointment...

Sunset Overdrive became a surprise hit during the Xbox One's early years and a sequel was expected to be announced soon after release, but alas, there has been nothing but silence on that front, until now! Insomniac Games has lighted the beacon of hope.

Sunset Overdrive quickly won the hearts of both critics and gamers in general with its complete disregard for the fourth wall and a script that took itself just as serious as the game was. It was the perfect blend of fun, Tony Hawk, and third-person shooter. It has been about two and a half years since the release of Sunset Overdrive and neither Microsoft or Insomniac has said anything about a sequel or the future of the series at all.

At DICE 2017 developer Insomniac, via Gameinformer, finally gave fans some news on the future of Sunset Overdrive. According to Insomniac's president, Ted Price, you'd have to ask Microsoft why no sequel has been announced yet. He also revealed that Insomniac's hands aren't tied until Microsoft asks for a sequel since they own the rights to the franchise, so there is still hope.

"We are passionate about that franchise, and we own it, so you may see more Sunset in the future from us." […] "No promises, and no timeline to speak of, but it is something that represents our willingness to create unexpected experiences."

As of now, Insomniac is hard at work on the PlayStation 4 exclusive Spider-Man game and their VR project, the Unspoken, so the release of a new Sunset Overdrive might take a while.
