There’s a reason why Destiny: Rise of Iron won’t come to last-gen systems

Yesterday Bungie announced and revealed the latest expansion for Destiny, Rise of Iron, won't be coming to PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. However, Activision has said that they are looking into ways of helping last-gen players as well.

In an interview with VG24/7 Bungie's Eric "Urk" Osborne clarified why PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 players won't be getting the latest expansion, and one main reason was the player base.

He said:

"The overwhelming majority of our player base is now on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Around 90%".

Osborne continued by saying that the other main reason was that such a big expansion would need some drastic changes to be made in last-gen which would mean changing the whole Destiny experience, removing content that players have already paid for.

“In order to add new content at this time, and especially on the scale and scope of Rise of Iron, we would have to take away from those older consoles, you would have to lose something. We still wanna make sure that people playing on legacy consoles still have all the content that they paid for to date."

According to Osborne and Bungie, it is not just difficult to pull off but impossible to make Destiny: Rise of Iron the big expansion that it will be and also release it on Playstation 3 and Xbox 360 without locking players out of content they previously paid for, doing so would "destroy" the Destiny experience.

"We want to make sure that people who play Rise of Iron get a bunch of new content, that it’s worthy of the title of expansion, and delivers tons of new stories, cinematics, characters and places to visit, the new raid and the new gear and all that fun stuff, and we wanna do it in a way that doesn’t destroy the work that was done and the game that exists on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360."

But PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 players shouldn't worry too much because according to VG24/7, Activision is looking into ways of letting last-gen player upgrade to next-gen. Though exactly how this upgrade is supposed to work has not been revealed but it will probably be some sort of trade-in deal where older copies either gives you a discount or the new version for free.

"We are exploring potential options for players to upgrade Destiny from last-gen to next-gen and will have more to say about that with our hardware partners soon."

Destiny: Rise of Iron is set for release on September 20 and will be bigger than both The Dark Bellow and House of Wolves combined, that's a lot of new content and if the rumors are true then Rise of Iron will be the last expansion before the release of Destiny 2.
